Detective Nick Armstrong seemed like a good man. He talked about right and wrong all the time. He was even friendly. He introduced himself to Officer Nolan early on and the two men clicked. They became friends overnight because of everything they had in common. They talked to each almost every day and Nolan thought he knew Armstrong better than anyone. The men became especially close after they dealt with the serial killer Rosalind Dyer. Dyer had tried to warn Nolan about Armstrong and Nolan had refused to listen. He thought he knew better. He thought Armstrong was a friend and so it was unfortunate that Armstrong turned out to be dirty.
Armstrong is a dirty cop. He has been working with the Armenian mob. He has been cleaning up their messes and he also covered for them when Serb Derian killed a cop. Armstrong made sure the evidence in the case went away. He also killed a fellow officer to cover up what he did and now he wants out. He tried talking to Ruben Derian about getting out. He said he paid off his debt a long time ago and Ruben basically laughed in his face. There was no getting out once he sold his soul. Armstrong was their man now and they were going to keep him on a leash until he stopped being useful. And that wasn’t going to be for a long, long time.
Ruben wanted to make sure the evidence against Serb stays away. He didn’t want one of his own to go down for a cop murder and so Armstrong was told to do anything to keep the evidence from coming back. It was even suggested that he kill anyone he suspected might be onto him. Armstrong thought he had been careful and that no one suspected him, but he forgot about Nolan. Nolan has been close to the action. He’s seen everything and he’s been putting pieces of the case together. He soon realized Armstrong was the only one who could be pulling the strings. It had hurt at first to believe his friend could be capable of murder and corruption. And then he found the evidence of murder.
Nolan found proof that Armstrong killed his fellow cop to cover for himself. Nolan couldn’t keep quiet with that sort of information and so he turned to the one person he knew he could rely on. He turned to his partner. Nolan reached out to Harper and he explained to her what he found. He even showed her footage of Armstrong receiving text messages while they were looking for Serb. Nolan thinks Armstrong was receiving direct messages from the Armenian mob throughout the investigation and that he was arranging things accordingly. Harper was skeptical that Armstrong would be dumb enough to use his actual cell phone. She didn’t think they would get any evidence if they collected it and so she came up with another idea.
Harper came up with a sting. They were going to pretend they had an inside guy into the Armenian organization and they were going to use this to force Armstrong to use his side phone. Harper figured he would use his burner to check out who might be talking. She had later turned out to be right because once Armstrong believed there was an inside man – he used his burner and he tried to warn the Armenians. Both Harper and Nolan now know his burner number and they thought they could connect it to the mob. Only Armstrong was smart. He was using a fresh burner and it seems like he changes it every day.
This means there was no backlog of Armstrong’s actions. The partners needed to find a new way to take him down and that’s when Nolan came up with the idea to talk to Dyer. He reached out to the serial killer. He asked her what she had on Armstrong and she admitted she knew he was a dirty cop. She had broken into Armstrong’s apartment back then. She found his hidey-hole. She found the evidence he was collecting as part of his insurance and she told Nolan all about it. Nolan realized he couldn’t use a serial killer’s word to get a warrant. And so the only available option to him was to break in.
Nolan later broke into Armstrong’s home. Armstrong almost caught him too. Armstrong knows someone broke in and he even has an idea who it was. He just didn’t do anything about it until later. Armstrong didn’t go after Nolan and it’s a good thing too because Nolan wasn’t the only one looking for evidence. The whole of the LAPD was looking for reasons to take down the Armenians. Officers Bradford and Chen had used their Armenian contacts to find Serb. Officers Lopez and West also found other evidence proving Serb was in the car when their fellow officer was shot and killed. This ties the Armenians to their cop killer. The LAPD can now take them all down and so this ruined Armstrong.
Armstrong contacted Nolan once he supposedly knew it was all over for him. He told his former friend that he wanted to explain himself and so he asked Nolan to come to his place alone. Nolan did so. He went over to Armstrong with his gun and he tried to convince Armstrong to turn himself in. But Armstrong had one last surprise. Armstrong manufactured evidence against Nolan. He made it look like Nolan was the dirty cop and he had Serb Derian even tell the police that John Nolan was a dirty cop.
Armstrong even talked Nolan out of arresting him by saying there was evidence planted at Nolan’s office and so Nolan went looking for it.
He went looking for it and he found it just as the police were pulling up to his place
