Prince Charles may have some big and ongoing plans for the monarchy that could shake things up, especially among the younger generation of royals, at least according to one royal author. As royal watchers know, the royal family has undergone a big change recently, with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping down from their roles as senior working royals.
Well, according to Nigel Cawthorne, who wrote “Prince Andrew: Epstein and the Palace,” Prince Charles would like to follow in the example of other European monarchies and modernize the institution so that the privilege of being a senior member of the royal family will be “balanced out” by various responsibilities.
Specifically, Cawthorne said that “like the Windsors’ relatives who reign in the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, and Spain, he prefers to dampen a sense of entitlement among royals.” In other words, it seems that Prince Charles believes that senior royals who enjoy titles and other lavish perks should work for their keep.
Prince Charles, who is of course next in line to the British throne after Queen Elizabeth, seems to believe that just because one is a certain number in line to the throne, one should automatically be entitled to housing or other perks. Cawthorne noted that this would result in a more “slimmed-down” version of the monarchy.
It’s been speculated that Prince Charles, once he becomes king, is planning on drastically reducing the number of full-time working royals and possibly revoke the HRH title from those who aren’t actively working and representing the royal family.
One normally sees extended family on hand for a few key royal events per year, such as the Trooping The Color celebration for Queen Elizabeth’s birthday, but the reality is that just a few royals are considered to be senior royals and work full-time and receive taxpayer money.
It will be interesting to see exactly what type of monarchy Prince Charles has in mind when he does eventually become king. It looks like there could be some big changes, and not all members of the royal family – in particular, those with titles who are not senior working members of the family – could get their feathers ruffled.
