In tonight’s 9-1-1 episode, Years ago, the driver of a school bus had a heart attack one day at work. The poor man slumped over at the wheel. He crashed the school bus into a parking structure and one of the kids on the bus saved him by performing CPR. The little boy who did that went on to become a local hero. He gained new friends. He was on the local tv station. He liked being a hero so much that he went on to become a firefighter and Bobby added him to the team. It was Jonah. Jonah liked being a hero. He probably liked it a little too much. Hen suspected that Jonah deliberately let patients get sick in order to be the one that stepped in at the last minute to heal them.
But something didn’t go to plan. Someone died. Hen suspected that person was dead because of Jonah and so she went to Chimney with what she thought. He didn’t necessarily believe Jonah was a killer. He did however believe Hen wouldn’t come to him over anything. She has great instincts. If she suspected that there was more to Jonah than they knew, she was probably right. Hen and Chimney went to work on the day they both had off because they wanted to sneak into Bobby’s office. They wanted to read Jonah’s file. They managed to read that Jonah bounced around a few cities for a while before joining the LAFD fourteen months ago.
They also read Jonah’s reports. He used flowery language. He also just wrote about what he did and not what he and Hen did. Jonah has a massive ego. Hen realized that from the beginning and so his reports weren’t shocking. The whole moving to different cities every two years did seem odd, though. Hen and Chimney reached out to the other paramedics in the cities where Jonah worked. They remembered him as being a good paramedic. He was downright eager to do the work. The only negative thing they were willing to say about him is that sometimes he’s odd. Which wasn’t anything new because even as a kid he was odd.
The young Jonah liked drawing pictures of people at the guillotine. He was emo before there was emo. Hen hadn’t known that detail when she was talking to her wife about her suspicions and so Karen said something important. She said murderers don’t start with a murder. Now, Hen thought about that. She thought about it for a while and then she started looking into Jonah. Not just his past as a paramedic, but his past overall. She found out about the school bus incident. How Jonah was lauded as a hero. He was given a key to the city. He was also given the scholarship to go to college. Jonah got everything from one moment as a kid. And that’s what gave him the hero complex.
Jonah likes saving people. He needs to be needed. He kills people sometimes. He does that by pushing drugs when he doesn’t have to and that’s what he did with Claudette. Claudette survived a fire. All she needed was oxygen. There was no need to give her any injectables and that’s what Jonah did. Hen went to Chimney with her hunch. Together, they went over to Buck’s place to talk to Taylor. They spoke to Taylor off the record. They wanted her help in getting footage of the fire at the call center. Taylor came through by providing a video. And they later saw Jonah inject Claudette with something.
This proved their theory. Jonah was pushing things in order to become a hero again. Like he was when he was a kid. He became addicted to the attention and now he can’t stop. It’s why he moves around every couple of years. He doesn’t stay long once he’s worn out his high at one place. He, therefore, moves on to another city so that he could start over. Hen and Chimney found all the evidence they needed to take this to Bobby. Hen went over to Bobby’s house. She talked to him and Athena. Bobby did as everyone knew he would. He made a report to his bosses and Jonah was put on suspension. He was no longer in place to hurt anyone else.
But Jonah didn’t react well once he heard he’d been suspended. He called Hen. He acted like a jilted lover and he told her that “he’d show her”. Hen heard that and she instantly thought of her family. She called home to tell them to get somewhere safe. She also replayed the conversation with her wife Karen and it was Karen who wisely said that Jonah wouldn’t be jealous of her. It would be Chimney. Chimney was Hen’s former paramedic partner. Jonah would be jealous of him more than anyone else because he would suspect that Hen threw him over just to get Chimney back as her partner.
Hen went rushing over to Chimney’s apartment after talking to her wife. She was afraid for her friend. Hen went looking for Chimney and she didn’t find him at his apartment. She instead found Jonah. Jonah drugged her. Jonah brought her to a second location. When Hen woke up, she found herself tied to a chair and Chimney strapped to a table. Jonah kept injecting Chimney with something to make his heart stop only to inject him with something else at the last minute to get the heart started again. He was doing that a while when Hen realized that Chimney was coming. She distracted Jonah long enough for Chimney to get out of his restraints and grab the defibrillator.
Then when Jonah went to go check on him, Chimney shocked him unconscious. Chimney got out of restraints and before they knew it the police were showing up. They got called by Karen. Bobby also showed up and he punched Jonah several times before he was restrained. No one could believe how a serial killer was operating in their backyard.
It also didn’t help that Taylor used her inside information to beat everyone to the punch in naming and shaming Jonah. Buck certainly wasn’t happy with her. He asked her before to let this one go and she couldn’t. She just couldn’t.
THE END!
