In tonight’s 9-1-1 Lodestar episode, Wyatt came by the house. He wanted to introduce his new girlfriend to his dad and stepmom. He also wanted to break the news that he was dropping out of college. The college thing was pretty much a done deal. He didn’t even take his midterms. He was dropping out and he was doing so because he wanted to become a firefighter.
Like his dad. Wyatt kinda needs the money right now. His girlfriend was pregnant and they were keeping it. They knew their finances couldn’t stretch for a baby and both of them going to school and so they decided only one of them would continue college. And that would be Leigh Anne.
Wyatt actually stopped by the house because he missed the deadline to apply to AFD. He was wondering if his dad could put in a good word for him to the Fire Chief and that way he can start earning an income sooner. But Judd was so shocked about becoming a grandad that he needed a few minutes to process everything.
Judd was still in shock when he returned to work on the next shift. He hadn’t wanted to talk about his new grandbaby with his friends just yet. And so he was keeping mum.
Matteo was trying to do the same with his own situation. Matteo has this cousin that looks exactly like him. The only way to tell the difference between the two is because Matteo is the good one and his cousin Marvin was the bad one. Marvin likes to borrow other people’s car to take them for a joyride. He did that with a Ferrari recently.
He crashed into a minivan and seeing as he was a repeat offender he now has to pay a higher bail. They were asking for twenty-five grand this time. Marvin called Matteo expecting Matteo to pay it like he normally does. And Matteo didn’t have the money.
Matteo had some savings, sure. He didn’t have twenty-five grand. He needed to borrow to get that money and he hadn’t wanted to tell his friends about the situation. Only he couldn’t afford to pay the bail himself.
He eventually decided to come clean to someone and that someone was Owen. Matteo asked Owen for the money. Owen asked him if he was in trouble. He knew that Matteo didn’t normally go through twenty-five grand much less need it and so he wanted to help Matteo. He just wasn’t going to enable him or let him enable his cousin without saying something.
Matteo told Owen all about Marvin. He explained how he lived with Marvin’s family as a kid when he came to the country and that Marvin was like a brother to him. Marvin looked out for Matteo as kids. Matteo now believes he owes him. He was set on getting Marvin the money and so he didn’t take Owen’s advice when Owen said that Marvin will never learn if he keeps bailing him out. Matteo ignored him. He started selling his Pokeman cards online. He was prepared to sell his favorite card no less for this cousin when Nancy found out what he was doing.
Nancy caught him selling his cards. She got the story out of him about what was happening with Marvin. She felt bad that he was about to sell his favorite card. She decided to lend him the money he needed to bail out his cousin and so now he doesn’t have to sell his collection. All he has to do is pay back Nancy once Marvin makes it to court. Matteo expected that to happen and unfortunately it didn’t. Marvin was barely out for two hours when he decided to break the conditions of his bail by joyriding in another luxury vehicle. He was driving in a Porsche when he got into another car accident. And this one proved fatal.
Marvin was killed in the accident. He was gone now and Matteo blames himself for his cousin’s death. He couldn’t believe that he put his trust in Marvin when it was clear Marvin had a problem. Marvin has never learned his lesson after getting trouble. He just did the same thing over and over again.
Matteo only blames himself because he realizes now that Owen was right. He shouldn’t have continued to enable his cousin. Marvin had needed some serious help. He liked getting in trouble and he wasn’t always like that. Marvin used to be the good one. And it used to be Matteo that was constantly getting in trouble.
Matteo got drunk after Marvin’s death. He began to hallucinate. His memories were colliding with his current situation and he went on a trippy ride. A ride that reminded him that he did owe Marvin.
He remembered that Marvin took the blame for him after he accidentally burn down his middle school. Matteo was hanging out with a bad crowd back then. He was getting into all sorts of trouble and his cousin took the blame because he was an American citizen. He knew that Matteo would be deported back to Mexico if he got arrested. And he couldn’t let that happen.
Matteo left Mexico when he was six years old. He has no memories of Mexico and so Marvin saved him from being deported. Marvin then entered the system. He went down a long and dark road and that’s when he talked himself into believing that the world owes him something for what he sacrificed. He started “borrowing” other people’s cars.
He would usually return them if he wasn’t caught and now Matteo has a heart full of guilt. Matteo couldn’t bring himself to break Marvin’s death to the rest of the family.
Matteo was woken up from his drunken haze. He was treated for his head wound and he became convinced that he needed to turn himself in for his crimes. He wanted to tell the police that it was him that set the fire all those years ago. He wanted to torpedo his whole career because of what he did. And so Owen told him he was atoning, he was doing that everyday by coming to work as a firefighter and saving lives.
Judd meanwhile had come clean to Tommy. He told her that Wyatt wanted to join AFD. He hadn’t wanted to help his son and so he later told Wyatt that he thought he was too soft for the fire department.
Only Grace reminded him that he was Wyatt’s father. It was his job to toughen up his son. Judd decided to just that when he found out that Wyatt saw the Chief himself and he talked his way into getting a position at the Academy. He also didn’t use Judd’s name to do it. Wyatt was now on his way to becoming a firefighter and so Judd agreed to help him toughen up for the job.
THE END!
