On tonight’s NCIS: ORIGINS episode, Gibbs killed someone in cold blood. Yeah, his walk down memory lane got really dark tonight. He fell apart after his family was murdered and the only way he could heal was killing the man that took his family away from him. Gibbs hunted down this killer. He killed him in Mexico.
There was no evidence of his involvement in the crime only the odds were pretty low that Pedro Hernandez managed to tick off two snipers. Lala knew instantly when she heard that a sniper killed Hernandez that Gibbs did it. She knew it. She also didn’t want to be around Gibbs or Franks anymore. She doesn’t trust them when they’re together and she didn’t want to be dragged down with them.
Lala was going to put in for a transfer. She told Gibbs about it. He tried to talk her out of it. The two of them have become friends and he said he couldn’t tell her about what he did.
He didn’t want to put that burden on her, but Lala felt like she couldn’t trust him after learning the truth. She thought the best thing she could do was put some distance between them. She was going to do just that when they all came back from their time off. It was the Christmas holiday season after all. Gibbs didn’t have anywhere else to go. He signed up for night duty at the office.
Gibbs needed to keep busy. Just six months ago, he was tearing up his apartment to the point that his landlord kicked him out. He was calling his father when he was sure his father wouldn’t answer.
Gibbs was just being self-destructive. Gibbs was even sleeping in his truck bed when it started to rain. His former landlord saw him and she felt so bad for him that she agreed he could move back into the apartment. He was never going to get his deposit back. She was going to use that to fix up the holes he punched in the walls.
Somehow Gibbs ended up befriending his landlord. Her name is Ruth. They did puzzles together. It kept Gibbs from wallowing until his new friend fed him some tough love.
She knew she was helping him hide from the world and so she cut the strings. She forced him to go back outside. She made him get a job. He worked as a cashier at the supermarket. He would come home cranky only it didn’t stop him from putting puzzles together with Ruth. Gibbs also tried to reach out to Franks. Franks was avoiding him for a while.
Franks was afraid of what Gibbs had to say. Gibbs saw him come into the supermarket with Tish. He tried to talk to him and that’s when Franks laid out the truth.
He knew Gibbs was contacting him to either push for more information or to confess to what he did. Franks didn’t want to know either way. He knew ignorance was better off than knowing the truth. Gibbs still needed someone to talk to. He eventually told Ruth everything. Someone had robbed Ruth. They got the kids’ license plate and had some beers afterwards.
Ruth didn’t judge Gibbs for killing that man. She helped him see that he could be a great cop. He has the makings for it and Gibbs realized that as well. Ruth confided in him that she has a son.
She wasn’t a very good mother to him growing up. Her son now lives in New Orleans. He doesn’t want anything to do with her. It makes her sad because she’s dying. She waited until Gibbs came back after graduating from NCIS to tell him. She didn’t want to ruin his chances at everything and she wanted to wait to tell him until after he had his psych eval.
The last plan got interrupted because Gibbs figured something was wrong. He grilled Ruth. She told him she was dying and Gibbs went on to fail his psych eval.
He was going to drink his problems away after that when Franks reentered the picture. Franks was going to get Gibbs out of jail for getting into a fight with two marines. Only Franks didn’t have to worry. Ruth was there. She bailed out Gibbs. She talked to Franks. She told him that Gibbs failed the test because of her and that Gibbs needed a second chance.
Ruth was Gibbs’s only friend. She was dying. She didn’t want to leave Gibbs alone in the world and so she appealed to Franks better nature. It worked. Franks hired Gibbs.
He ignored the psych eval. He ignored the many red flags about Gibbs and that included him still getting into fights at the bar. Gibbs became an agent. He helped Ruth get back into contact with her son. She later died that holiday season with her son at her side and Gibbs got that phone call right after Lala said she was transferring out.
Lala saw that Gibbs was hurting. She put aside her anger with him to be his friend. She asked him about the phone call and he told her the long story about Ruth.
By the end of the story, Lala changed her mind about transferring somewhere else. She was going to stick with Franks. She was also going to keep being there for Gibbs while he struggles with finding himself.
One of the last things Ruth told him was that she was glad to help him find his calling and he did that when he joined NCIS.
THE END!
