Dr. Dean Archer was a good doctor. He didn’t always follow the rules. Or pretend crazy patients weren’t crazy. He just made sure everyone was treated and some didn’t like the way he went about it. Which was why he got replaced. Archer was recently replaced as the Chief of the Emergency Department. ED for short. Dr. Lenox got the job over him. She was very strict. She was even stricter than Archer was and he was in the military. The job also wasn’t the only thing he lost. His only child moved to California to take care of his mother and his ex-wife died. Sean called his dad to tell him about her death tonight.
Archer’s ex-wife struggled with addiction. Sean inherited that from her. He did his best to support his mom and she still went off on a bender. She hit her head. She died from the injuries. Sean had to tell his dad about it and he mentioned that his mom wanted to be cremated as well. Leanne didn’t want a funeral. She thought those were a waste. She just wanted to be cremated and for life to carry on like nothing happened. Sean wanted to respect those wishes. Only Archer struggled with them. He was married for a while to Leanne. She was a big part of his life. He didn’t think doing nothing was going to help.
In spite of that, Archer tried to follow her wishes. He went to work like nothing happened. He also lied to Sharon when she asked about Leanne. He told her that his ex was good the last he heard from her. It wasn’t a terrible lie, but his day kept going further downhill after that. Sharon asked him to step in for Lenox. Lenox took a personal day and so she turned to Archer because he had experience running the ED. Archer was fine with stepping back into that role until he remembered all that he had to put up as the boss.
The computer systems went down. The traveling nurses that Lenox hired didn’t know how to work with the IT department. Archer had to deal with it. Archer was also grumpier than normal. Everyone noticed it. Dr. Asher tried to talk to him about it. She was his closest friend and he didn’t even want to talk about Leanne. Not to her or anyone else. He also didn’t shy away from tough cases. There was a boy that came in with high blood pressure. He had a heart transplant less than six months ago and the boy thinks the heart doesn’t want him.
Miles said the heart’s original owner has been telling him that she doesn’t want him to have her heart. Now that could be because of the drugs that Miles was taking. Miles was on a prescription that can mess with his mental health. Archer had to call for Dr. Charles for an assist. Miles also had to deal with a pregnant woman that came in. Laurel received a shock when she tried to flip a switch at home. The wiring was a little haywire. The woman was also eighteen weeks pregnant. Archer called for Asher. They checked the woman and they found she has a tumor on one of her ovaries.
Asher had to order tests to see if it was cancerous. There was a chance it was. If it was, she going to need treatment quick. Treatment that couldn’t wait for Laurel to deliver at full term. The tests later came back. It showed the tumor was cancerous and so they advised her to have the tumor removed now. It poses a risk to the baby. It also was the best chance of her living long enough to see her child grow up. Laurel initially wanted to refuse the surgery. Her priority was her child’s safety until Archer began yelling at her.
Archer was yelling at everyone tonight. He yelled at Laurel for being stupid. He yelled at Miles’s parents for arguing so much that it most likely caused Miles’s anxiety. Archer was so out of control that everyone called him out on it. Asher took him to task. Charles told him sympathy would do more for Miles than him yelling. Archer did his best calm down and the day still got worse. Lenox didn’t take a personal day because she wanted to go shopping or even chill out at home. She took a personal day because there was a woman at the hospital that was dying.
The patient had no one. Lenox didn’t want her to die alone. She went into the patient’s room the second her shift was over and she stayed by Astrid’s side until she passed. When she ultimately did, it was Archer that had to call it because Lenox wasn’t officially on call at the time. Archer also figured out the best way to get through to Miles. He found the donor’s mother. Her name is Heather Williams. Her daughter was McKenzie. Heather agreed to come down to the hospital to talk to Miles. She explained how kind her daughter was and that she would never reject Miles or want him to die.
Miles didn’t think he deserved a heart because his health problems caused his parents to divorce. They’ve been fighting ever since. They were constantly arguing. They didn’t try to shield Miles from it and so he thought he didn’t deserve a heart. He thought he caused his parents’ divorce. He thought he was so horrible that he couldn’t keep his parents together. Heather helped him to see that he wasn’t at fault. She along with the doctors also noticed a miracle. Miles didn’t have a panic attack until he went swimming.
It was the first time he went swimming since his surgery. What he didn’t know was that his donor drowned while hanging out with her cousins. It was his heart that panicked when he went into the water. It was such a rare occurrence that even Archer thought it was a miracle. It made him calm down. He was finally back to his old self when one of the traveling nurses made a huge mistake. She didn’t properly retrain a patient high on PCP. He came out of his restraints and tried to attack everyone with a shard of glass.
The guy sliced Lenox’s arm before she was able to drug him. The failing nurse was sent home early. Archer meanwhile stitched up Lenox’s arm for her. The two of them got to talking and Lenox told him her family’s history. Her mom had a health condition that killed her when she was forty-five. Her father then killed himself because he didn’t know how to live without his wife. Now she and her brother could be carrying the same condition and yet they refused to get tested for it. They didn’t want to know if they were living with an expiration date.
Lenox only told Archer about it because she knew he wouldn’t pity her for it. Archer also talked to Asher at the end of the shift. He apologized for bringing up her dead mom when she didn’t agree wit his tough love approach with Laurel. It worked. Laurel was getting the surgery only he didn’t need to offend Asher just to get the job done. Archer told his friend about Leanne’s death. She advised him to not look back. He’d only have regrets if he kept looking back and so Asher made sure to come over with dinner.
And Archer finally got to grieve.
