We all know the bride is usually a nervous wreck the night before exchanging vows, that’s a given – but what about the groom? Kate Middleton has mentioned her unsettled stomach before tying the knot with Prince William. Now, in an interview for a documentary on Queen Elizabeth II, William is telling us about his night before the ceremony.
“I hadn’t slept at all that night because obviously all the crowds were on The Mall. They were singing and cheering all night long. So, the excitement of that, the nervousness of me and everyone singing meant I slept for about half an hour.”
“So when I did get up in the morning, I can say that I had prepared myself totally by that point. It was a case of just going out there and trying to enjoy the moment and also get through it. But it was good fun, it was really good fun. The hardest thing was trying to walk down the stairs with my spurs on, sideways. I had visions of myself and my brother Harry colliding and crashing down the stairs together. But, yeah, it was quite a big moment.”
William also speaks of his relationship now with the Queen saying, “We’re definitely a lot closer than we used to be. When I was younger and a small boy growing up I would probably say Queen first, then grandmother. But now it’s definitely a case of grandmother first, and Queen second. Prince Phillip makes her laugh… together they’re a great couple. When things go wrong they absolutely adore it. When things go wrong around them they are the first people to laugh.”
It’s so nice to actually hear William speak of his relationship with his grandmother and it’s great to know that in many ways he really is just a normal guy. The wedding may have been on a grander scale, but he was just as nervous as the guy who elopes.
