Are you soap fans ready to help make history next week? As you already know, this Monday, April 29th both All My Children and One Life to Live will relaunch via The Online Network and also Hulu Plus. Bringing back these shows is a brilliant move on behalf of Prospect Park, who bought the rights to both when they were yanked from the air over a year and a half ago. Soap fans were also integral in getting both shows revived, with GLOBE Magazine launching a full scale Save The Soaps campaign.
This is absolutely a groundbreaking week for the whole soap industry. Why? Because as these shows are revived online they lose so many of the rules that were necessary to air on television. That means that scenes will most certainly be more realistic. Sex scenes will be hotter. Fights can include more colorful language and the overall chains that kept producers bound in appropriate daytime television have totally been cut.
Long time soap fans will have the opportunity to welcome back many of their old favorite characters but they’re instantly given more room to really act and grow as people on screen. New viewers will tune in just to see what all the talk is about and let’s be real here- the episodes will run for 30 minutes, 4 days a week (Friday is a recap of the week). That is not a huge time commitment so they’ll probably hook a lot of new viewers that never intended to find themselves invested in the first place.
The internet is about to help launch soaps into the future. AMC and OLTL are paving the way for a new kind of broadcasting for legendary favorites once their television air time expires. I will be tuning in on Monday, will you? Tell us your thoughts on the comments below!
